Identifying Technological Trends with Compared Cross Impact

Fraunhofer INT

We focus on planning of technological research and development (R&D) in areas with many relationships between technologies. Here, decision makers of government organizations are supported by introducing a methodology to make the technology impact more transparent.

The current technology impact and impact trends are shown from the R&D of an organization and compared to the technology impact and impact trends from the R&D of the organization's competitors. As a result, relative strengths and relative weaknesses of the organization's R&D activities can be calculated. Analyzing this over time shows technological trends from the perspective of the organization.

The Compared Cross Impact approach has been published in: Thorleuchter, D., Van den Poel, D., Prinzie, A.: A compared R&D-based and patent-based cross impact analysis for identifying relationships between technologies. Technological Forecasting and Social Change 77 (7), 2010, 1037-1050, doi:10.1016/j.techfore.2010.03.002.

The article includes a case study, where technology trends for the German Federal Ministry of Defense are shown. You can download the document: RePEc:rug:rugwps:10/632.
